Life in the UK Test for ILR and citizenship

You may need the test for settlement, often called indefinite leave to remain, or British citizenship. Passing does not itself grant either status.

Check your route

Requirements depend on the application you are making. Use the official application guidance and form to establish whether you need the test and what other evidence is required.

The English-language requirement is separate

Do not assume a Life in the UK pass satisfies every language requirement. The official English-language guidance explains the accepted evidence and exemptions for settlement and citizenship.

Moving from settlement to citizenship

If you already passed for settlement, GOV.UK says you do not need to take the test again. Keep the reference number or older test evidence and follow the citizenship application instructions.

Where to start

Use GOV.UK’s settlement guidance, citizenship guidance and English-language guidance. These explain the requirements beyond this test.

Quick answer

Must I repeat the test for citizenship after passing for settlement?

GOV.UK says you do not need to take it again if you have already passed.
